A hadith prohibiting a woman from travelling a journey of a specified distance except in the company of a mahram (a male relative she cannot lawfully marry), cited as the textual basis of the classical mahram travel requirement.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4425
"A people who entrust their affairs to a woman will not succeed" — reported as Muhammad's response on learning that the Sasanians had placed a daughter of Khosrow (Buran) on the throne.

"Do not prevent the female servants of God from going to the mosques of God."
