Women in Islamic Law

Practices widely described today as "Islamic" concerning women — including segregation, face-veiling, travel guardianship, and exclusion from mosques and public office — rest on a genuinely uneven evidentiary base: a small set on explicit Qur'anic text, a larger set on hadith and juristic reasoning of disputed strength, and a substantial remainder on regional custom absorbed from the societies the early Muslim empire administered and only later read back into religious discourse.
