Revelation and Culture
Distinguishing revelation from the interpretation, tradition, custom, and political authority that accumulated around it is a recurring analytical move in historical-critical study of Islam. The Qur'an's own repeated criticism of blindly following inherited practice (2:170, 5:104, 43:22-23) supplies an internal theological basis for making the distinction rather than importing it from outside the tradition.
