630631 CE · Sasanian empress

Buran (Boran / Middle Persian Boran, Purandokht)

Following the overthrow and death of Khosrow II in 628, the Sasanian empire cycled through several rulers in rapid succession, including Buran, who reigned briefly from 630 to 631 and whose image and name survive on her own minted coinage (Pourshariati, 2008). Her accession is independently attested numismatically and historically, providing a rare case in which a hadith's stated historical occasion — reported in Sahih al-Bukhari 4425 — can be checked against external evidence.
