?–870 CE · Hadith compiler; author of Sahih al-Bukhari
Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari
Al-Bukhari (d. 256 AH / 870 CE) compiled Sahih al-Bukhari by arranging retained reports topically and by legal subject, a methodological choice that differs from Sahih Muslim's arrangement by chain-strength within a hadith. Jonathan Brown's study of the two collections' reception history traces how their status as uniquely authoritative developed gradually over the 4th–6th/10th–12th centuries, rather than being immediately recognized upon compilation.
