Abu Bakra (Nufay ibn al-Harith)

Abu Bakra is the sole transmitter of a hadith (Sahih al-Bukhari 4425) reporting Muhammad's response to news that the Sasanians had crowned a daughter of Khosrow II. He was also one of four men whose testimony accusing the Basran governor Mughira ibn Shu'ba of fornication failed to meet the Qur'anically mandated four-witness standard, resulting in his flogging for false accusation (qadhf) under Umar. Classical hadith criticism distinguishes the standard of uprightness required for courtroom testimony from that required for hadith transmission, and the great majority of classical scholars, including al-Bukhari, nonetheless rated him a reliable narrator (thiqa).
